About Us

Our History

The Johnson City Girls Club originated in May, 1944 from a Bible Study class at First Presbyterian Church. Two members of this group came up with the idea of forming a club that would offer local girls in need a place where they could find happy companionship and spiritual guidance. The early stages of the organization relied on a team of volunteers and donations from the community. By the end of the first year, 65 girls had become members.

The Girls Club introduced interdenominational bible studies, cooking and nutrition classes, and other programs. In 1949, the Club became a part of the United Way. As the Club continued to expand, they moved to larger headquarters thanks to the generous donations from the community. Our narrative is an amazing story of an all-out effort by a community who gave of themselves to help its youth, who by no fault of their own, needed guidance, understanding, and love. Like a home, if it has a good foundation, it is well built.

In 1989, the Johnson City Girls Club became affiliated with the Girls Club of America. A year later, the name was changed to Girls Incorporated. In 1993, we expanded again to our current location, thanks to yet another generous donation. The greater capacity allowed us to accept more girls into the program, and build partnerships with other organizations. A sports league with Johnson City Parks and Recreation was formed, offering soccer, softball, tee ball, and basketball.

Girls Incorporated is an organization designed to meet the needs of today's girls and tomorrow's women. It is a center-based program that provides a place for girls to meet and learn in a safe and supportive atmosphere. Girls Incorporated programs provide information, skills and resources to effectively assist in developing girls' capacity to be self-sufficient, responsible members of the community. We help girls overcome the effects of all types of discrimination attitudes, whether it be gender, race, or social class. As a part of the Washington County community for over 60 years, Girls Incorporated continues to strive to meet the needs of area youth.
